How to track fuel and EV efficiency
Units and formulas
Select units that fit your market and vehicle. PitSync supports MPG (US or UK/Imp),
L/100km, km/L, and EV metrics: mi/kWh, km/kWh,
Wh/mi, and Wh/km. Core formulas:
- MPG = distance (miles) ÷ fuel added (US gal or Imp gal).
- L/100km = fuel (litres) ÷ distance (km) × 100.
- km/L = distance (km) ÷ fuel (litres).
- mi/kWh = distance (miles) ÷ energy (kWh); km/kWh similar.
- Wh/mi = energy (kWh) × 1000 ÷ distance (miles); Wh/km similar.
Method: full-tank and charge-session logging
For ICE, use the full-tank method: fill to full, record odometer and fuel added, and repeat next fill. For EVs, log
each charge session’s kWh added and distance since the last session. PitSync computes rolling averages and flags drops.
Cost per distance
Enter fuel price or electricity tariff and PitSync calculates cost per mile or kilometre. Use this to compare routes,
tyres, loads, or driving styles, and to validate maintenance impact.
Regional differences
UK MPG uses Imperial gallons (4.546 L). US MPG uses US gallons (3.785 L). Figures are not directly comparable.
Metric drivers can track L/100km or km/L. EV drivers typically prefer mi/kWh or Wh/mi for range planning.
Link with maintenance
Efficiency shifts often follow tyre pressure changes, alignment, filters, software updates, or seasonal fuel. Keep
notes and receipts so you can correlate events with MPG or mi/kWh changes.
Set up in PitSync
- Add your vehicle and choose distance and volume units.
- Log a full-tank fill or EV charge with odometer and price.
- Repeat for a stable rolling average; attach receipts if needed.
- Review trends and cost per mile/km; investigate sudden drops.
